Controlled “r” Books

Children will discover that controlled “r” words are connected to a vowel.  The vowel has a different sound or no sound at all with a bossy “r.”  Controlled “r” vowels often sound the same but are spelled differently (“er” in stern, “ir” in dirty, and “ur” in turn).  By focusing on the controlled “r” words children will be able to recognize them in words when they are reading.
